ABOUT

Also known as hair restoration and hair replacement surgery

Hair loss also known as alopecia is a problem we commonly see among men and sometimes women. The causes of for alopecia are many ranging from hereditary-gene related, stress, diseases and as a side effect to some medical treatments. Some of these causes lead to temporary baldness while many lead to permanent one. Surgical transplantation of hair offers a good solution for baldness for both men and women.
Many people who consider hair transplantation also consider facelift and fillers.

INCISIONS, STITCHES & SCARS

Dr.Venkat Thota assesses your hair distribution, thickness and determines where to remove the hair follicles for transplantation. He strategically chooses a location that is surrounded by other hair & is discreet such that the resulting scar is unnoticeable. If a strip of skin is harvested from the scalp it will leave a long linear scar in the back of the head. If multiple graft sites are taken, it should result in pencil-point scars and these can be easily hidden by hair.

If a flap surgery and scalp reduction is done it will produce larger scars that may become more prominent if further hair loss is experienced. Dr.Venkat can give you a better indication of the likelihood of that occurring after a consultation.

HOW IS IT PERFORMED?

The surgeon chooses the method of hair transplantation based on the quality and type of hair you have and where you are losing hair. The common principle seen in all these methods is, the hair follicles are moved from one site on your body and grafted, or transferred, to the site that is lacking. The donor site is usually on the head.

The surgeon takes special care in maintaining the integrity of the scalp and for minimizing any possible trauma. The entire process is very tedious and often many skilled professionals are involved in splicing the follicles from the donor tissue. Depending on the amount of hair being transplanted, the surgery takes between 2 to 8 hours.

The various methods include

  • Strip Harvesting A strip of scalp generally from the back of the head is excised and used as the donor tissue for the follicular units. The borders of the donor site are sutured meticulously and any resulting scar is easily covered by new and surrounding hair. This is a common method and it is faster than harvesting from many different locations. The follicles are transplanted into the recipient sites.
  • Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) Instead of taking a single strip of scalp follicular units are harvested from multiple small areas around the scalp. Thus these small areas can be closed easily and don’t require sutures, also there is less bleeding and less discomfort during the post-operative period.
  • Flap Surgery A stretch of scalp with hair is partly excised and transplanted to a bald area. The cut borders of the donor site are approximated by sutures. Hair grows immediately from the flap as the transplanted skin is intact. Unlike FUE , it won’t need months to regrow. This covers a large area of the bald scalp and the follicle density is retained.
  • Scalp Reduction In some cases in addition to hair transplantation or as an alternative, a section of the bald scalp is removed and the hairline is pulled forward to fill in a bald spot. If more area needs to be covered with hair, hair transplantation or flap surgery can be used.

HOW LONG WILL MY RESULTS LAST?

The results from hair transplantation last for a lifetime.

However some patients may notice a thinning of hair or that they are losing hair from their original area, this can be due to the regular balding process. In such cases they may schedule another session hair transplantation for this area.
