ABOUT

Also known as male breast reduction

Some men have overly large, female like breasts. The causes are varied ranging from hereditary-gene related causes to overweight. Gynecomastia treatment by surgery aims to reduce breast size in men by methods such as liposuction, cutting out excess glandular tissue or using a combination of liposuction and excision.

INCISIONS, STITCHES & SCARS

Incisions for gynecomastia surgery are planned based on the amount of breast tissue you have and the elasticity of your skin.

  • Small breasts that are only fat: Only tiny incisions are made that are just large enough to admit a liposuction cannula, so the scar will also be tiny.
  • Large female-like breasts: The incisions and the resulting scars may extend across each side of your chest, but the Surgeon will attempt to hide them in a crease.
  • Firm breast tissue: Usually the incision & the resulting scar is under the areola.
  • Large areolas that warrant reduction: the incision & the resulting scar goes all the way around the areola.

Even those who have larger breasts and tend to get larger scars are usually quite satisfied with the results.

  1. For Liposuction Small incisions are placed such that they are hidden within the natural skin creases in and around the chest.
  2. If surgical excision is required, the incision is commonly made under the areola.

HOW IS IT PERFORMED?

Surgical options include liposuction, excision (surgical removal of tissue) or a combination of both approaches. The tissue in the chest region contains both glandular breast tissue & fatty tissue. Glandular tissue is denser than fatty tissue and liposuction cannot be performed for it.

Pseudo-gynecomastia is a condition in which the enlarged breasts are excess fatty tissue rather than breast tissue. In these cases the issue can often be corrected with diet and exercise alone.

If gynaecomastia is associated with puffy nipples, liposuction combined with chest reduction using glandular excision is needed.

AFTERCARE AND RECOVERY

Removal of sutures and drains: 5-7 days after surgery.

The surgeon will advise on the duration for which you may have to wear the compression garments.

Allow your body to heal and refrain from strenuous physical activity for at least 3 weeks.

Until the bruising and swelling subside avoid tanning and direct exposure to sun as these may aggravate the swelling. This period of refrain is usually 6 weeks.

As seen with most surgeries, the patient can notice a decrease in sensation around the operated site. This is more significantly seen in gynaecomastia cases that require liposuction. Most men find this decrease of sensation temporary and insignificant. At the most, it should gradually return within a year.

After the surgery, a phenomenon of spontaneous shrinking (by 10 to 50%) of the entire areola is seen, this usually happens when glandular tissue had to be removed in significant amounts.

Healing is a gradual process, be patient, for the swelling to subside and for the final results to be visible accurately, it may take three months or more.

HOW LONG WILL MY RESULTS LAST?

Usually the results of Gynecomastia are permanent, provided that you take care to keep your weight stable. If you were using any medication or anabolic steroids which led to gynaecomastia, their further use after the surgery can lead to recurrence.

Maintain good communication with the aesthetic plastic surgeon

Keeping safety in mind as well as for the most beautiful outcome of the procedure, we advise that you visit the clinic for follow-up evaluation at recommended times and also whenever you notice any changes in the treated areas.
