HOW IS A BREAST AUGMENTATION PROCEDURE PERFORMED?

In breast augmentation using implants, the surgeon creates a suitable incision, lifts the breast tissue and creates a pocket for placing the implant.

Based on your anatomy and some more factors the surgeon decides whether to place the implant above or below the pectoral muscle. The advantages and disadvantages of both will be discussed with you. If the implant is placed below the pectoral muscle, it would interfere less with mammography and during breast feeding.

Breast implants are placed either above or below the pectoral muscle.

Types of Implants

  1. Saline-filled breast implants:
  2. Silicone-filled breast implants
  3. Cohesive gel silicone implants: aka “gummy bear” or “form stable” implants. The gel is made of cross linked silicone molecules which makes the material thicker and firmer thus being able to retain their shape better as compared to the traditional silicone implants.

Fat transfer can be performed as an additional procedure to fill in any volume spaces and to give a better contour.

If you have any sagging or drooping breasts the plastic surgeon might recommend an additional breast lift.
